History of İstanbul – Reading & Excercises |C2|

Istanbul, positioned between Europe and Asia, has long served as a decisive crossroads of global commerce and political power. Founded as Byzantium in the 7th century BCE, it gained early prominence through its command of the Bosphorus. Reestablished as Constantinople in 330 CE, it emerged as the Eastern Roman Empire’s capital and a nucleus of Christian learning. Although the Fourth Crusade in 1204 deeply destabilized the city, the Byzantines reclaimed it and restored partial strength. The Ottoman conquest of 1453 transformed its urban identity through Islamic architecture and multicultural communities. Under Ottoman rule, Istanbul flourished as a diplomatic and intellectual powerhouse linking continents. After the empire’s fall, it adapted to republican reforms while preserving its richly layered historical legacy.
